Dear Mill Creek Enthusiast,
As the new joint Executive Director of the Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities and Groundwork Cincinnati—Mill Creek, I’d like to take this chance to introduce myself.
I’m a native Cincinnatian who grew up in Kennedy Heights and attended Walnut Hills High School. I earned a B.S. in Biology from Marietta College and an M.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine. Later I earned a law degree at the University of Cincinnati and practiced environmental law for 25 years with the Cincinnati law firm of Cors & Bassett, LLC.
I have a passion for stream protection and restoration. I have been active in several environmental non-profits over the years. I currently serve on the Board of American Rivers, a national river conservation group. I am also the Board Chair of the Grant County KY Solid Waste Management District. In the past, I have served on the boards of the Ohio Environmental Council, the Kentucky Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and the Kentucky Center of Native American Arts and Culture.
Although I’ve only been on the job for a month, I am impressed with the passion and dedication of the Council’s staff, the number and quality of projects we’re involved in, and the progress that has been achieved in the Mill Creek watershed. I’m also excited about what lies ahead! Through the closer collaboration and combining the strengths of two premier conservation organizations, I believe that the Mill Creek watershed is on the cusp of even bigger and better things.
Recent studies show that water quality in the Mill Creek has improved dramatically. It even surpasses the water quality of the Little Miami River! The diversity of fish and macroinvertebrate species in the stream has more than doubled in the last twenty years. Herons, ducks, beaver, and many other long-missing species of birds and mammals have returned to its shores. So has another species that has rarely been seen along its banks in recent years – people!
It’s your continued support that inspires us and makes our work possible. I want to hear more about why the Mill Creek is special to you and I look forward to seeing you on the Mill Creek!
